RE: FYI IT doesnt make noise when your landing Gear bends

Jim, I can't see the picture real clear. Was this a full "push through pin" that came out or was it a "spring loaded type"? The problem you're going to have with Jayco is they will try and say you didnt make sure it was secure. If this was a "spring loaded type" that you installed after purchase then they probably won't cover it.....

Can you at least be specific about who was "slamming" government workers? I'd like to read what he/she said. I hope this was not directed towards me because I happen to agree with you. But if it was, then you took my post the wrong way.....

RE: Costco RV Batteries

Mike, I just installed 2 of the Costco group 27 rv/marine batteries before this camping season. They have performed very well. I disconnect the positive leads between trips and they usually stay right around 12.8v. They are much better than the batteries that came with the 5er. I dry camp all the time and run my generator once or twice during the day to keep them charged. They are still at 3/4 full in the morning after running my heater, lights, water pump, television, all night. At $66 each you can't go wrong IMO.....

RE: Trouble for RV industry!

This is a trend that's going to continue for several years. Every time you turn on the news all you hear is how this company or that company is cutting back or completely closing it's doors. It's not just the cost of fuel that's causing the problems. You can pick from a list of things, from health care, the housing market, etc.
Anyway, I can't even see a light at the end of this tunnel. On our last trip I didnt see half the RV's I usually see on the road. Don't count on Congress to do anything about it either. Half of those bozo's have their hands in the oil industries and health industries pockets. Why should they care? They are not living paycheck to paycheck like most American's are.
Okay, I'm done with my rant.....
Ken
I'm glad you're done with your rant, now for mine.
Yes, this country is going to hell in a handbasket.
Yes, there's greedy politicians out there -always have been, always will be.
Now for the reason behind the purple haze:
The next time you go into the doctor's office, the emergency room, or even think of calling 911 for an ambulance, just remember.....................................................................................you stepped on some mighty big toes here.
I have only worked in the medical field for 9 years, but I've worked hard to get where I am and will tell everybody that not only am I in it for a living, but also BECAUSE I LIKE TO HELP PEOPLE OUT.
Try living on a Paramedic's wage if you think "healthcare" gets so much money.
So.............knock off the c(@& and get to the real point, you can barely afford what you have to start with (house, car, RV) and now you're blaming the rest of us????
Give me a break!
Where did you get the impression that I was blaming you or anyone else? When I say health care, I'm not talking about Paramedics. I'm talking about the cost of medication, such as pills, that cost the pharm companies 10 cents to make and sell for $5.00 a piece. I'm talking about the cost of health insurance. I'm talking about the sky-rocketing cost of co-pays, the outrageous cost of MRI's, etc.
When I talk of the housing market am I talking about realtors? No. I'm talking about the idiots that approved loans to people with bad or no credit that had no business purchasing a home in the first place. It all comes back to one thing, both in health care and housing......GREED.....it's the American way.
Congress has the power to do something about these things. Yet all we see is their "dog and pony" show trying to pull the wool over the publics eyes. They know if they actually did do anything about it they'd have to take a huge pay cut.
And by the way, I can perfectly afford everything I have so don't go on a rant about how "I blame everyone else because I can't afford what I've got". I retired when I was 43 years old after 21 years as a cop working some very dangerous areas and assignments. Yes, we're the ones that go in and make it safe for you before you have to go in. Think about that next time you go out on a call with a cop.....

RE: Front Door Lock Failures - Locked Inside 5er

I'm guessing that in a "true emergency" I won't be trying to get out the window. A good kick to the inside of the door should do the trick. Can't be any harder than kicking in a residential door, can it? I've had to force entry to a few homes before and it was not that hard. No, I'm not a burglar.....

Look at Starbucks. One of the most profitable companies several years back and is now looking at closing 600 stores nation wide. I really don't blame the economy so much for their down fall. I'd call it more greed than anything else.

RE: skylight in the shower

We got the vent insulated inserts from CW works great
Do they carry various sizes? I went to their site and saw the ones for the 14x14 vents but the skylights in the shower are much bigger. I guess you could just buy 2 of the smaller ones and use both on the larger skylight?.....

RE: skylight in the shower

I cut a piece of lightweight plastic-like material and put velcro on it and the edges of the skylight. It can be removed easily and works well.
I tried that with a piece of light cardboard but every time I went to check on the 5er (in storage) the cardboard was on the shower floor. I used velcro but when the sun heated up the sticky backing it just fell off. I think I'll see if I can find one of those wire rimmed car window shades. It won't fit perfect but it might just have enough tension to stay in the opening.....

RE: What would you have done?

It's pretty sad now-days that we have to worry so much about "civil liability" when just trying to be a good neighbor/camper and help someone. I'm only 46 but I still remember the days (60's & 70's) when people could help someone without the worry of being sued and with no expectation of something in return. Although I'd be in favor of helping this guy, I'd still have some serious reservations. You just don't know what motives there are behind anything anymore.
I'm in no way saying we shouldnt help eachother out. If I saw a camper having problems leveling, putting their awning out, backing, etc., I'd be the first one to offer help. It's just sad that we can't tell anymore when someone actually needs help or is just setting us up for a scam.....

RE: Yet another 15" to 16" wheel question

I went through Southwest Wheel when I went to a 15" wheel and tire from a 14". I got SIX wheels and tires mounted and shipped for under $800. My only complaint was the fact that their Goodyear Marathons were made in China. Discount Tire has some crazy prices. I also checked them first.....

RE: park cable tv hook up

You can always buy a 25 foot section and a 10 foot section with a coupler for those "just in case" situations. That way you'll have 35ft. You'll probably never need the 10 footer but it's better to have it if you do ever need it. Or just buy a 30-35 footer in the first place. Probably over-kill but you'll never get caught short.....

RE: park cable tv hook up

From what I understand, all you need is the cable with connectors on each end. You can buy the cable and add the connections yourself but I'd recommend that you buy the lenght you want with the connections already crimped on. If you don't get the connections on right your picture will be distorted. I know Lowes actually carries several lengths of cable with connections already added.....

RE: Future towables

Like Jon said, it's about what you're willing to give up to get the better mileage. I have a mid-profile 5er and I can stand in the beginning of the bedroom but have to bend down towards the front. If I spent alot of time towards the front I'd want a high profile 5er. It's not as important to me as it is to Jon. My F250 V10 gasser gets horrible gas mileage regardless and I don't take long trips so 1 or 2 MPG more does not really afftect me. I'd love to get more MPG's but the way I look at it, accept it or sell it.....

RE: Brake Controller

I have a Prodigy and just re-adjusted it on our last trip. I usually don't have to do that but it started getting a bit "grabby". The problem with adjusting your brake controller before each trip is that your trailer brakes really don't start working well until they heat up. With the Prodigy I adjust the controller dial after the brakes heat up and then use b1, b2, or b3 as needed. I never have to touch the dial setting. If you adjust your brake controller too high before your brakes heat up (which I did), your brakes will grab.....

RE: Keeping Fresh Water Fresh

I drain mine after each trip, and start the next trip fresh.
I'm with big dave. Drain it and re-fill before each trip. I usually dry camp so my water is almost empty by the time I get home anyway. Also consider this, if you do nothing else, at least drain your water heater and leave the plug/anode out. If you leave water in your water heater for a prolonged period of time it will smell like rotten eggs the next time you use it. You will know it when you see the water. The water will turn a milky color and smells really bad. Trust me on this one. I found out the hard way.....

RE: Dry camping questions

There are several things you need to consider while dry camping.
My main concern while dry camping is my batteries. If your batteries go dead you won't need to worry about water because you won't be able to pump it. You didnt mention it, but if you're going to dry camp it would be wise to take a generator along. We use our A/C all the time so a generator is a must. We run the generator a couple times a day to keep the batteries charged. Don't rely on plugging your 5er in and starting your truck. That only works well while driving and RPM's are high.
Like others mentioned, I take two plastic 5 gallon water containers (Walmart) and a funnel with me so I can re-fill the fresh water if needed. If you do this you also need to monitor your gray water tank. It fills up alot quicker than your black tank does.
Take a large cooler along and put all your drinks in it and load it with ice. This will also give you more room for food in the fridge. Keep a spare bag of ice in your freezer if you have room. We keep all our drinks, including a case of water, in the cooler. Only the milk stays in the fridge. I also take extra bottled watter, cokes, beer, juice, etc., and fill the cooler as needed. We keep our cooler outside under the awning so we don't have to go in and out of the 5er to get drinks.
Minimize your water use for dishes. We use disposable plates, cups, and untensils and we use very little water for pots and pans.
Remember to turn your hot water heater swith off until you actually need hot water. It only takes about ten to fifteen minutes for the water to get hot so there's no need to keep it on all the time. Same with the water pump switch.
Hope this helps a little. Have fun.....

RE: cleaning your plug-in connections

I picked the 5er up from storage yesterday and decided to adjust the Progigy to 5.5 for the trip home just to see how it would do. It's after the brakes warm up that it gets grabby. I had it set between 6.0 and 6.2 prior to this. Anyway, turning it down a bit has solved the problem. I guess I got fixated on keeping it around 6.0 because that is the starting point by the Prodigy directions. I'm going to see how it does on this trip at 5.5 and if needed I'll up the boost.....

RE: Gun on trailer?

If I ever meet you on a traffic stop or "wherever" all I would ask is that you tell me if you have a firearm; especially if it is in your vehicle. If you are not a convicted felon, the gun isn't stolen and you have it cased properly... you've got nothing to hide.
Stay safe
Amen. I have absolutely nothing against law abiding citizens having guns in their RV's or TV's. All I ask is that you let me know it's there. By the way, in New Mexico your TV or RV is considered an extension of your home and you can have a loaded concealed firearm in either one. Just let the officer know it's there but please don't pick it up to show him/her.....
